January 2025 | Wildfires in Los Angeles

Find Real Time Updates via Watch Duty

Hi all; I wish my first blog post of 2025 was filled with a bit more positivity, but alas, my hometown of Los Angeles has started the year facing an unimaginable crisis—wildfires that are among the worst the city has ever seen.

Beginning on January 7th, these fires have devastated communities, claimed lives, and displaced tens of thousands of residents. It is heartbreaking and yet another wake-up call about how vulnerable we are to climate change and extreme weather events.

The Toll in Numbers

  • Lives and Homes: At least 25 fatalities and the destruction of 12,000+ structures and 40,000 acres. Entire neighborhoods, like Pacific Palisades and Altadena Hills, have been reduced to ashes.

  • Financial Impact: The estimated economic loss is staggering—likely to surpass $50 billion.

  • Fuel for the Flames: Critically dry conditions and freakishly strong winds created the perfect storm for this disaster.

What’s Being Done + Where to Find Aid

Both local and federal governments are mobilizing. Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency, and President Biden has authorized federal disaster relief funds.

Thousands of firefighters and National Guard members as well as volunteers and ordinary citizens are working tirelessly. And yet, the scale of this catastrophe means they’re stretched thin, so I’ve compiled some resources below:

Immediate Relief and Emergency Services

California Department of Insurance: Guidance on claims for fire damage. | View Resources

save-la.org | One 11th grader’s herculean efforts to create a comprehensive and easy to use list of current resources available. What a G!
