10 Ways to Focus on Self Care this World Mental Health Day 2021
Today is World Mental Health Day, but taking time for your self-care should be a daily occurrence.
Fortunately, there are many ways we can practice self-care even briefly day-to-day.
DON’T INDULGE IN SELF CRITICISM
No one is harder on you than yourself!
Oftentimes we say things to ourselves that we wouldn’t say to our worst enemy. Be gentle with yourself; you are doing your best.
2. AVOID EMOTIONAL VAMPIRES
Most of us have had the unlucky experience of meeting or having to deal with emotional vampires.
These types of people are not self-aware and can drain your energy. Do your best to avoid them!
3. PICK AN AREA OF A ROOM TO DE-CLUTTER
Decluttering can be very therapeutic and calming.
Pick one area of a room to deal with at a time, so you don’t get overwhelmed.
4. EAT THE RAINBOW! REACH FOR NUTRITIOUS, PLANT-FORWARD FOOD
What we eat has a huge impact on our mental health.
Consider eating functional foods that nourish your microbiome and make for a positive digestive experience.
5. MEDITATE OR JOURNAL FOR 10 MINUTES DAILY
Get up a little earlier in the morning to journal or meditate. There are a ton of helpful apps and programs to assist in this.
Keep your journal by your bed so you don’t forget!
6. GET UP AND MOVE, EXERCISE, OR STRETCH FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES
It has been medically proven that some exercise daily has a huge positive impact on our bodies.
Even if you can’t commit to a long workout, try to stretch and move around for a set period of time to stay active.
7. MAINTAIN A SET SLEEP SCHEDULE
Remember my article on the importance of sleep?
Well it is still true, and still important!
Sleep (most importantly sleeping at a consistent time!) is one of the most vital things you can do for your mental health.
8. STAY HYDRATED - SET UP A REMINDER TO DRINK ENOUGH WATER
Your body needs hydration to function properly!
Set up an app on your phone or iWatch if you have one to remind you to drink enough daily.
9. CARVE OUT A LITTLE TIME FOR A SOOTHING HOBBY
We can’t be working all the time. Hobbies are healthy and let your mind and body rest and recharge.
Spend time gardening, reading, listening to music, watching a fun show, snuggling with your pet, or doing whatever it is you do that makes you happy.
10. SPA TIME IS BEST TIME
Self care can be as simple as slipping on some comfy pajamas, applying a face mask, and closing your eyes for 15 minutes.
Your mind and face will thank you!
